WayBack is a flexible and reliable file backup utility intended for easily creating backups of sets of files from your hard drives onto removable media such as Zip drives and CD-RW drives, and to network drives.
WayBack differs from many backup programs, in that files are written to the target drive in native Windows file system format, rather than in any proprietary format. All your selected files and folders are written below a target folder (that you specify), with the file and folder hierarchy of the source preserved in the target.
There are several advantages to this approach.
It makes browsing the target with Windows Explorer easy.
You can transfer files to other machines, without the need for the special software on that system.
In the future, if you're no longer using the same backup program, you can still restore files.
Any drive accessible via a drive letter can serve as the target for the backup. (WayBack does not backup to tape.) The target does not have to be the root of a drive -- it can be a folder at any level below the root.
Note that many removeable media, such as CD-RW drives and Zip drives, support automatic compression, eliminating the need for additional compression by the backup utility.
To do a restore, you can simply copy the files back to your hard drive using Windows Explorer.
WayBack is not intended for full system backups. Rather, you use it to backup groups of files, such as all your word processing documents, all your Internet downloads, or all the files related to a specific project. WayBack provides the ability to specify a set of wild card patterns for the purpose of automatically including and / or excluding certain kinds of files.
Backup jobs
You can define any number of backup "jobs", and specify the set of files and folders that are to be included in each. If you do a backup to a target that has previously been used as the target for the same backup job, only files that are newer are copied to the target.
